Previewing the top five sports betting events from 12/21 through 12/27
There’s some good news and some bad news. Let’s start with the bad to get it over with. One of these games is going to get canceled. For the last seven weeks, a game on this list has been either canceled or postponed due to Covid-19 issues. The most recent was the Sun Belt Championship Game. So apologies to players and fans of Coastal Carolina and Louisiana Tech for placing the curse on you.
Now on a more positive note, the NBA is back. There are some great early season games, with tantalizing slates on both opening day and Christmas. This is the first week since March that we have NBA, NFL, college football, and college basketball all at the same time, so it should be an exciting week for sports fans and sports bettors.
With that being said, here are the top five sports betting events from December 21 through December 27.
5. CBB: Kansas Jayhawks vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
Date: Tuesday, December 22
Time: 9 p.m. est.
Location: Lawrence, Kansas
Spread via Wager Champs: Kansas -2.5
Last week, we highlighted a battle between two of the best offensive teams in college basketball. So it’s only right we give elite defense a chance to shine. Both of these teams have top-10 defenses, which has translated into many wins. Kansas is ranked #3 by the AP Poll. West Virginia is #7. Both teams are also off to a 7-1 start with their lone loss coming to #1 Gonzaga.
The Big 12 is going to be extremely competitive this season, with #2 Baylor joining these two teams as National Championship contenders. A win in this game would give either team early momentum in the Big 12 title race.
4. NFL: Green Bay Packers vs. Tennessee Titans
Date: Sunday, December 27
Time: 8:20 p.m. est.
Location: Green Bay, Wisconsin
Spread via Wager Champs: Packers -3.5
Is it possible for the top team in the NFC with a Hall of Fame quarterback to be under-the-radar? Probably not, but it does seem like the Packers aren’t being talked about as much as one would expect. A win in this game would change that, and would likely give more runway to the idea of the Packers being a true threat to the Chief’s Super Bowl defense.
But Derrick Henry and company won’t go down easy. There’s a reason they are just 3.5-point underdogs on the road. The Titans are 10-4 this season, but who they’ve beaten is more impressive than the record itself. The Titans have blowout wins against the Bills and the Colts on the road, as well as an impressive victory in Baltimore against a desperate Ravens team. Aside from an embarrassing loss to the Bengals, the Titans have been one of the best teams in the league this year. This game, in a primetime window at the always stunning Lambeau Field, should be a treat.
3. CFB Cure Bowl: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs. Liberty Flames
Date: Saturday, December 26
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Orlando, Florida
Spread via Wager Champs: Coastal Carolina -6.5
For the second week in a row, a Coastal Carolina football game is one of the most anticipated sports betting events of the week. Imagine reading that sentence three months ago. But it’s true. Coastal, with an undefeated record, a great story, and fun system, is America’s adopted college football team. It’s a shame they aren’t getting a crack at one of the big boys in a New Year’s Six bowl game. But Liberty is a really good team in their own right.
The Flames have wins against Syracuse and Virginia Tech on their way to a 7-1 season. In fact, this would be a game between undefeated teams if not for a one-point loss to NC State.
Don’t let the school names fool you. This is a matchup between two really good football teams and is easily the best matchup of the first week of bowl games.
2. NBA: Golden State Warriors vs. Brooklyn Nets
Date: Tuesday, December 22
Time: 7 p.m. est.
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Spread via Wager Champs: Nets -7.5
This game has storylines galore. It is going to be our first look at Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant playing together. Will it work? Maybe. They are talented enough that the Nets should make the Eastern Conference Championship Game at a minimum. But it also has the potential to be a disaster. Either way, it will be fun to finally end the speculation and see what happens on the court.
This is also going to be our first time seeing Durant against his former team. Durant said playing against his former teammates isn’t a big deal, but there will almost certainly be a little extra emotion on both sides.
Oh, and this is also going to be our first look at the new Warriors. Curry is back and healthy, which is always fun. But they also added Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre Jr., and 2020 2nd overall pick James Wiseman.
This game is the perfect way to start the NBA season.
1. NBA: Los Angeles Lakers vs. Los Angeles Clippers
Date: Tuesday, December 22
Time: 10 p.m. est.
Location: Los Angeles, California
Spread via Wager Champs: Lakers -2.5
An intra-city rivalry in the NBA capital of the United States. The defending NBA Champs vs. a team expecting to be there this season. Lebron James vs. Kawhi Leonard. It’s going to be all sorts of fun.
One of the biggest criticisms the NBA gets is the players don’t care about the regular season. That may be true, but not for this game. Both teams would love to make an early statement in the latest edition of this rivalry game. If Vegas is right, we are in for some late-night excitement.
