Previewing the top five sports betting events from 12/14 through 12/20

There were several points this year where it didn’t look college football would ever start. Then even once the season finally began, there were several points where it looked like it would never cross the finish line. But as rocky as it was, the postseason has arrived on schedule.

All five power conferences have their championships this week, and nine of the teams involved are ranked. The AAC and Sun Belt also have championship games featuring four teams with just two combined losses. In addition, there is a standout game in both the NFL and college basketball to round out what should be a really fun weekend of sports. Without further ado, here are the top five sporting events of the week.

5. CFB: Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Date: Saturday, December 19

Time: 3:30 p.m. est.

Location: Conway, South Carolina

Spread via Wager Champs: Coastal Carolina -3.5

One of the best things to come out of this college football season is the emergence of Coastal Carolina as America’s team. Between the mullets, the teal field, and their remarkable underdog story, the Chanticleers are impossible not to root for. It doesn’t hurt that they also have a really good football team. They are one of the final remaining unbeaten teams, they have two wins against top-25 teams, and are currently ranked #9 in the AP Poll. Now, they have one remaining hurdle in order to enter bowl season undefeated. And it’s a really big hurdle.

If it weren’t for Coastal Carolina, Louisiana would probably be the team that captured our hearts. They are ranked #19, have a 17-point win against the College Football Playoff Committee’s #6 team, and would be undefeated themselves if not for a three-point loss to Coastal earlier this year.

It’s not often that this is said about a Sun Belt Championship Game, but this rematch will absolutely be must-watch television.

4. NFL: Kansas City Chiefs vs. New Orleans Saints

Date: Sunday, December 20

Time: 4:25 p.m. est.

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

Spread via Wager Champs: Chiefs -4

A potential Super Bowl preview between the top team in the AFC and a team tied for first in the NFC? Yes, please!

Although their loss to the Eagles was somewhat baffling, the 10-2 Saints are still one of the best teams in the NFL. They have a stifling defense, veteran coaching, and just enough offensive playmakers. Meanwhile, the 11-1 Chiefs have the best offense in the NFL, the MVP frontrunner, and haven’t lost since October 11th. There’s a chance they won’t lose again. The Saints, especially at home, are one of the only teams with a real shot to prevent the Chiefs from running the table.

3. CFB: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Florida Gators

Date: Saturday, December 19

Time: 8 p.m.

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Spread via Wager Champs: Alabama -17

It seems crazy to say this given how good Alabama is every single season, but this may be the most dominant regular season they’ve ever had. There hasn’t been a single game this season when they were even remotely threatened. Their closest game was a 15-point win at Ole Miss.

Will this SEC Championship be their first real test? Florida quarterback Kyle Trask has had a remarkable season and will surely finish as a Heisman finalist. But he’s not even the best player on his own offense. Kyle Pitts is the best tight-end college football season has seen in years, with 640 receiving yards and 11 touchdown catches in just seven games. Vegas thinks this will be just another Alabama curb-stopping, but Florida has the offensive firepower to make some noise.

2. CBB: Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Date: Saturday, December 19

Time: 12 p.m. est.

Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Spread via Wager Champs: Gonzaga -3

Do you like points? Do you like high-quality basketball? Then this is the game for you!

According to KenPom rankings, Gonzaga is the best team in the country and has the second-best offense. Iowa is the third-best team and has the best offense. Both of these teams also play at warp speed, so this duel could easily be one of the highest-scoring games of the season.

This game also has a lot of star power. Iowa’s Luka Garza is the favorite to win National Player of the Year. He is averaging 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks on nearly 70% shooting from both the field and three-point range. Meanwhile, Gonzaga has projected lottery pick point guard Jalen Suggs and a surefire All-American forward in Corey Kispert, who is averaging 22 points per game.

If you are one of those people who doesn’t watch college basketball until after football is over, do yourself a favor and make this game your exception.

1. CFB: Clemson Tigers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Date: Saturday, December 19

Time: 4 p.m. est.

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina

Spread via Wager Champs: Clemson -10.5

This is the matchup we’ve been waiting for since Notre Dame beat Clemson in an overtime thriller just over one month ago.

Notre Dame is ranked #2 at 10-0 in their first and possibly only ever ACC season. Clemson is ranked #3 at 9-1, with their only loss coming against the Fighting Irish and without star quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

In this highly anticipated ACC Championship game with tremendous star power and high stakes, Clemson opened as a double-digit favorite. It seems high. It will be interesting to see if Notre Dame can make it a game or if the bookmakers know something we don’t.
